“The movie, just like its subject, has such an authentic identity.”

-Vaughn Sexton (review from Letterboxd)

SYNOPSIS

East Helena is a smelter town to its core, but after well over a century of smelting, it has also become a Superfund cleanup site. As the town continues to grow and expand, health officials fight to clean up high levels of lead found in the ground and water and the community searches for a new identity without the smelter.

An environmental documentary short film

RELEASED: 2024

“From the Shadow of the Stacks” takes a past, present, and future approach to telling the story of East Helena, Montana’s tumultuous relationship with the ASARCO Smelter and the lead contaminants left behind. It opens with a brief recap of some of the town’s history, then jumps to modern-day East Helena and the issues it faces, and concludes with a look at what’s to come for the smelter town.

“From the Shadow of the Stacks” originated from a school assignment at the media arts program at the University of Montana. A group of aspiring filmmakers and total strangers were given the task to conceptualize, develop, produce, and release a documentary film rooted in Montana within the span of the semester. What started as homework evolved, almost immediately, into something greater.

Despite the origins of the project, the film itself is just as blue collar, just as DIY, and just as fueled by blood, sweat, and tears as the town of East Helena itself is. When financial backing from the college fell through, the filmmakers ended up financing the film all on their own. They also volunteered more than their required time to make weekly trips from Missoula (where the filmmakers lived) to East Helena in order to capture the story.

The plot of the film developed completely on its own, shifting the original focus of the film in the right direction to covering a broader, more pressing issue with more information and context. The resulting product is an important, historical journal of a landmark time in East Helena’s history.

“From the Shadow of the Stacks” was the first film production directed by Chris Shields as well as the first one that featured him as the sole Director of Photography. This sparked a trend in his filmography and now, the majority of his work features his name as Director AND Cinematographer. Shields was born and raised in the town of East Helena, so the project meant a great deal to him from the very beginning.

The hodge-podge crew featured aspiring filmmakers who had never made movies before as well as industry professionals. Non-sound folk helped record sound, non-gaffers helped light scenes, and anyone and everyone who could record footage, recorded. The film ended up being shot on five different cameras, including Shields’ cellphone.
